Family Information

Son of Gavin Shanks and Annie Simpson Shanks of 117c Main St, Coatbridge. John's brother Private Gavin Shanks (32879) of the 14th (Service) Battalion Highland Light Infantry was awarded the Military Medal for Gallantry on the Battlefield on his 22nd Birthday. In May 1918 Gavin was wounded and was in Hospital in England. He had enlisted on the 02/08/1916 and was discharged (gunshot wounds to the knee) on the 22/08/1918 aged 23. From the 1901 Census - Address - 11 Hutton Drive, Govan, Glasgow - Gavin Shanks aged 29, Annie S Shanks aged 27, Gavin Shanks aged 6, Jeanie Shanks aged 4, Jessie Shanks aged 3, John Shanks aged 2, visitor Devina Simpson aged 23, boarder John Leckie aged 23. John also had a sister called Bessie Shanks born 1902 and brothers Robert Shanks born 1904, David Shanks born 1906, Thomas Shanks born 1911, Alexander Shanks born 1914 and John Simpson Shanks born 26/05/1920 who is named after his brother who fell 2 years earlier. John's Pension was awarded to his mother Annie.

Additional Information

The 12th (Service) Battalion Royal Scots arrived in France in May 1915 and were part of the 27th Brigade, 9th (Scottish) Division. John disembarked at Boulogne on the 31/03/1918. He was posted Missing on the 25/04/1918. He was wounded and taken prisoner on that date. He succumbed to his wounds on the 12/05/1918 and was buried by the Germans. John received his wounds at the Second Battle of Kemmel, 25th - 26th April 1918. This was part of the Battles of the Lys, 9th April - 29th April 1918 : The third German offensive Operation Georgette takes place in Flanders with the objective of capturing key railway and supply roads and cutting off British Second Army at Ypres. After initial successes the German attack is once again held after British and French reserves are somehow found and deployed. He is 1 of 16 prisoners of war who lie in Dendermonde Communal Cemetery and Extension (1 of those remains unidentified). John was formerly with the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) (38270) before transferring to the 12th Battalion Royal Scots on the 02/04/1918.
