Robert Ross

Robert and the Battalion arrived at Boulogne on the 23/08/1914 and were part of the 10th Brigade, 4th Division. Robert was Killed in Action at the Battle of Armentieres, 13th October - 2nd November : The cautious advance by the 4th and 6th Divisions of III Corps continues on the 16th - 18th October 1914 until they encounter considerably large German forces advancing towards them. The important town of Lille is already well inside German-held territory. This clash develops into the Battles of Messines and Battle of Armentieres. This was part of the Battles of La Bassee, Armentieres and Messines, 10th October - 2nd November 1914 : The whole British Expeditionary Force is moved to Flanders from the Aisne, as part of an effort to outflank the Germans in France. On arrival it encounters German forces moving to outflank the Allies. These battles form part of a phase often, but incorrectly, referred to as the "Race to the Sea". The Battle extends northwards as further forces arrive, with the First Battle of Ypres and the Battle of the Yser taking place at the same time. Robert originally joined the 26th Foot (4312 Scottish Rifles) on the 21/08/1902 before transferring to the Regular Army and the Seaforth Highlanders on the 21/08/1903. Robert is also remembered in the St. Augustine's Parish (book) Roll of Honour.
