Samuel Nicholson Rogan

Samuel arrived in France on the 06/12/1915 with the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles 3298). He transferred to the 2/7th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers and on the 20th January 1917 the 2/7th Battalion sailed for Egypt for duty as a Garrison Battalion. They arrived in Egypt on the 12th February 1917 then proceeded to Cairo to relieve "1st Garrison Battalion Devonshire Regiment" at Kasr-el-Nil Barracks. Samuel was formerly with the 10th (Service) Battalion Gordon Highlanders (S/5515) from the 07/09/1914 to the 10/10/1914. He was discharged as deemed NOT LIKELY to be an efficient soldier. Garrison Battalions were raised from men too old/young/unfit for full military service. They literally garrisoned areas, leaving regular Battalions free to fight. Egypt was a popular posting for them. Samuel and Sapper George Dunn (see Directory) were the LAST 2 MEN TO DIE ON ACTIVE SERVICE from the COATBRIDGE MEMORIAL.
