The Battalion arrived at Le Havre on the 16/08/1914 and were part of the 15th Brigade, 5th Division. William arrived in France on the 23/10/1914. William was Killed in Action 34 days later at Lindenhoek, 6km south-west of Ypres town centre. The Battalion War Diary states - "Lindenhoek 26/11/1914 : 2.20am - Heavy rifle fire - Germans used machine-gun - no hostile advance : 7.20am - reported situation quiet to 14th Brigade : 6pm - reported to Brigade- all quiet - large number of unexploded shells noticed. Casualties 3 killed, 4 wounded". William is also remembered on the St. Augustine's Church, Poole at War and the Stewarts and Lloyds Rolls of Honour (see photos).
