George and the Battalion arrived at Boulogne on the 10/05/1915 and were part of the 26th Brigade, 9th (Scottish) Division. George was killed just over 2 months later whilst on sentry duty in an advance trench near Festubert. He raised his head above the parapet and was shot through the mouth by a sniper. The War Diary for the 18/07/1915 states : "Germans exploded mines at S.E side of crater, N of GIVENCHY. Heavy rifle fire on working party on our left front. 1 Killed, 1 Wounded. 1 man killed by a sniper". THE MAN KILLED BY A SNIPER WAS GEORGE. here. George is listed aged 22 on his Headstone and aged 24 at the Family Plot in Old Monkland Cemetery.
