Robert and the Battalion arrived at "C" Beach, Suvla Bay, Gallipoli on the 07/08/1915 and were part of the 30th Brigade, 10th (Irish) Division. Robert was Killed in Action at Gallipoli on the 16/08/1915 just 9 days after his arrival. British and Australian forces were still stuck on the beaches despite fresh landings at Suvla Bay 9 days earlier. The Battalion were attached first to 31st Brigade on water & ammunition fatigues, then attached to 33rd Brigade on the 9th August. They moved forward to positions near Chocolate Hill in support of Brigade attack (heavy casualties). They were relieved on the 12th August and went to rest camp "A" Beach. They re-joined 30th Brigade on Kietch Tepe Sirt on the 13th August. They took part in attack along the ridge on the 15th and suffered further casualties. Took over positions at Spion Kop on 16th. More casualties during counter attacks. First reinforcements arrived, 3 Officers and 157 Other Ranks. Robert is listed as 2nd BATTALION on the Coatbridge Memorial. Robert was formerly with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (16402). His name on the Helles Memorial kindly donated by Mick McCann at the British War Graves website who supply photos FREE OF CHARGE
