George McAllister Mills

Killed in Action on the 15/09/1918 at the Quarries near Hulloch (Loos Salient)

The Battalion arrived in France in July 1915 and were part of the 45th Brigade, 15th (Scottish) Division. In September 1918 the Division was based at the Loos Salient where it had fought 3 years previously and had suffered huge casualties in the main Loos front between the 25th September and 16th October 1915 : 6,896 of which 228 Officers. From the 12th to the end of September in 1918 the Division was involved in desperate fighting in and around the "Quarries". To start with the 6th Battalion Cameron Highlanders pushed forward to the north-east side and established posts on the far side. On the 15th the enemy endeavoured to regain their lost trenches but were driven back with heavy loss after severe fighting of which the 13th Battalion Royal Scots bore the brunt. This is where George fell. His trench belongings included photos, pocket case, letters, cards, religious book, a brooch and a card case. In 1918 he overstayed his leave by 3 days and lost 6 days pay. George's body was exhumed from Dud Corner Cemetery near Lens and reburied in St Marys Advanced Dressing Station Cemetery (see Reburial photo and Service Record 13). George's grave inscription reads "SLEEP ON DEAR SON THY TROUBLE O'ER TILL WE MEET TO PART NO MORE". (this was the inscription from his mother whose address is given as Home Farm, Drumpellier, Coatbridge).
