Additional Information

James died when his ship H.M.S. "Black Prince" was lost with all hands (858) at the Battle of Jutland. The ship was separated from the rest of the fleet when it found itself in a glare of enemy searchlights. A tornado of shells sent her ablaze and in 2 minutes she was a mass of flames. For a while she was a floating furnace and then after a huge explosion she sunk. Many thanks to my friend Dom who took a photo (1) of James' name on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. James is also remembered on the Maxwell Parish Church and Stewarts and Lloyds Rolls of Honour (see photos). See photos for James' Newspaper clippings x 2, his Navy Birth, Marriage and Death Record, his name on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial x 2, his Naval Medal and Award Rolls, his CWGC Grave Registration (listed as 18 years old), his name on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial Panel List the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Blazer Badge, James' Pension Record and H.M.S. Black Prince.
