The 17th Machine Corps Company were formed in the 24th Division on the 17/01/1916 at Poperinge. They were part of the 17th Brigade. Charles initially enlisted in the Highland Light Infantry (32440) on the 27/06/1916 and transferred to the Machine Gun Corps on the 20/11/1916. He arrived at Boulogne on the 22/01/1917 and joined the 17th Company on the 16/02/1917. The Division took part in the Battle of Messines, 7th - 14th June 1917 shortly before Charles received his fatal wounds. Major Joyce wrote that he had lost one of his best men. See Service Record 13 for the declaration mentioning his family which was signed by Minister Samuel Lindsay. This man compiled the amazing 1919 book Coatbridge and the Great War. This book has provided the photographs of the men on this website. Charles is also remembered on the St. Patrick's Church (book) Roll of Honour.
