From the 1901 Census - Address - Crosshill, Old Monkland Parish, Baillieston - Matthew Birrell aged 40, Maggie M Birrell aged 37, William Birrell aged 8, Jessie Birrell aged 6, Alexander Birrell aged 4, James Birrell aged 2, father's uncle Thomas Craigie aged 70, fathers nephew John Birrell aged 20. James also had a sister called Peggie (Peggy) who was born in 1908. James' Pension was awarded to his brother William and sister Margaret (Peggy).

James Died of Pneumonia in the Military Hospital in Rugeley just over 1 month after enlisting. He was admitted to the Hospital on the 31/10/1918 and died on the 08/11/1918.
