Killed in Action on the 27/11/1917 by an enemy shell near El Jib

The Battalion sailed from Devonport for Gallipoli on the 26/05/1915, going via Egypt (5th - 28th June) and Mudros (1st July), landing at Cape Helles on the 3rd July. On the 08/01/1916 they were evacuated from Gallipoli to Mudros and arrived in Egypt in February. They were part of the 157th Brigade, 52nd (Lowland) Division. The Battalion took part in the Battles of Nebi Samwil and El Jib from the 17th to the 27th November 1917. The 157th Brigade held the line east of Beit Izza until the evening of the 27th. Whilst facing El Jib for 3 days the 157th Brigade was shelled continually, the explosions echoing up and down the valley and ravines. On the 25th about 120 shells fell in the Brigade Headquarters area. The heaviest bombardment was on the 27th when the 1/5th Highland Light Infantry lost 2 men killed and its adjutant and 8 men wounded. Hugh was 1 of those men killed.
