George McLeod

George and the 10th (Service) Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry arrived at Boulogne on the 13/05/1915. They were part of the 28th Brigade, 9th (Scottish) Division before being transferred to the 46th Brigade, 15th (Scottish) Division on the 14/05/1916. They were amalgamated with the 11th (Service) Battalion. The 253rd Company joined 214th Brigade, 71st Division on the 09/11/1917 then left with the Brigade for 67th Division on the 12/02/1918. The Archangel Memorial, which consists of panels fixed into the east wall of the cemetery, commemorates 219 British officers and men who died in Russia, particularly during the North Russian campaign and whose graves are not known. George drowned accidentally when out fishing with another man when one of the oars in the boat broke and the boat was carried down the stream. It struck a rock in the rapids and overturned. Both men could swim but George kept behind his friend to look after him in case he failed. George's friend reached the bank first and got a long stick, stretching it out to reach George. Unfortunately when George took hold of the stick his friend lost his footing and fell into the river again. Both men were swept down the river and George disappeared. His friend succeeded in gaining the bank again. Searches for George's body were carried out over several days but without success. George was formerly with the Highland Light Infantry (19544).
