The 1st Battalion Gordon Highland arrived at Boulogne on the 14/08/1914 and were part of the 8th Brigade, 3rd Division. John arrived in France on the 11/05/1915. He fell 38 days later. The Battalion on June 18th, returned to Bivouac at Brandhoek. As stated above John is listed as using an alias. For more information on this see Service Records. John is listed as McCHRYSTALL on the Coatbridge Memorial and McCRYSTAL on the Menin Gate Memorial. He is listed as deserting from the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers to join the Gordon Highlanders (see Service Record 11). He is also remembered in the St. Augustine's Parish (book) Roll of Honour.
