The Battalion arrived at Le Havre on the 14/08/1914 and were part of the 8th Brigade, 3rd Division when Robert was Killed in Action during the German retreat of 1918 less than 6 weeks before the Armistice. SEE PHOTOS FOR THE BATTALION WAR DIARY 1st SEPTEMBER - 9th OCTOBER 1918. The War Diary states - "HAVRINCOURT 01/10/1918 : Battalion received orders at 11am to move forward and occupy trenches East of MASNIERES. Arrived at 3pm. Received orders to advance through 76th Brigade. TRENCHES 03/10/1918 : Great Artillery activity". The Division were involved in the Battle of the Canal du Nord, 27th September - 1st October 1918. This was part of the Battles of the Hindenburg Line, 12th September - 12th October 1918 : A series of very large scale offensive operations that advance to and break the Hindenburg Line system. Carried out by the First, Third and Fourth Armies these victories rank among the greatest-ever British military achievements. The German Army fights on but it is increasingly clear that their ability to do so is declining fast. Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and United States Divisions all play key parts. Robert was a member of the Carndale Cricket Club (see Newspaper clipping for letter to Robert's parents from Club Secretary Mr J Hutton).
