ADDITIONAL FAMILY INFORMATION - From the 1901 Census - Address - Ivy Cottage, Coatbridge - Robert Bannan aged 37, Annie Bannan aged 35, John Bannan aged 14, Robert Bannan aged 7, Joseph Bannan aged 7, James Bannan aged 5, Elizabeth Bannan aged 3, Ann Jane Bannan aged 1, Joseph's Grandfather Thomas Gardner aged 60, Joseph's Grandmother Annie Jane Gardner aged 58, Joseph's Uncle Robert Gardner aged 20, Joseph's Uncle James Gardner aged 16, servant Mary Carr aged 15. Joseph and the Battalion arrived in Boulogne on the 12/05/1915 and were part of the 27th Brigade, 9th (Scottish) Division when Joseph fell at the 3rd Battle of the Scarpe during the Arras offensive (Battle of Arras), 9th April - 16th June 1917 : Once again the British are called upon to launch an attack in support to a larger French offensive: the battles of the Chemin des Dames and the hills of Champagne. The opening Battle of Vimy and the First Battle of the Scarpe are very encouraging, but once again the offensive - often known as the Battle of Arras - bogs down into an attritional slog. Final attempts to outflank the German lines at Bullecourt prove terribly costly. According to the War Diary the Battalion casualties for the 2nd and 3rd May were - "2 Officers Killed, 6 Officers Wounded, 1 Officer Missing, 12 Other Ranks Killed, 174 Other Ranks Wounded and 58 Other Ranks Missing". Joseph was accidentally shot on the right leg on the 24/05/1915 (see Newspaper clippings for information on what happened sent to Joseph's father by Lieutenant Peter Wyper and 2nd Lieutenant Geoffrey W. Kindersley of the 9th (Service) Battalion). Joseph is also remembered in the St. Augustine's Parish (book) and St. Mary's Churches Rolls of Honour (see photos).
