Killed in Action on the 27/01/1916 north of Chalk Pit Wood, Loos

The Battalion arrived at Boulogne on the 10/07/1915 and were part of the 46th Brigade, 15th (Scottish) Division when Robert fell. On the 27th January 1916 (Kaiser Wilhelm II's birthday) the Germans endeavoured to carry out a local attack on that part of the line held by the 46th Brigade, north of Chalk Pit Wood, Loos. At 3pm the trenches held by the 7th Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers were heavily shelled, and almost flattened for several hundred yards. This was followed by heavy rifle and machine-gun fire, under which the enemy attempted to advance against the Borderers and the 10th Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) on the left. The attack failed signally, but casualties were heavy, the Borderers losing some 100 men and the 10th Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) 28 killed and 33 wounded. This is were Robert fell.
