In August 1914 the Battalion were in Ghorpuri Barracks, Poona, India. On the 14/10/1914 they departed on troop ship “Saturnia”, landing at Devonport, England on the 16/11/1914. They moved to Winchester and came under orders of the 81st Brigade, 27th Division. William and the Battalion arrived at Le Havre on the 19/12/1914. The Battalion moved to Salonika, arriving there on the 05/12/1915. William was Killed in Action on the opening day of the capture of the Karajakois (Karajakoi Bala and Karajakoi Zir) from the 30th September - 02 October 1916. The 29th Infantry Brigade of the 10th (Irish) Division and 26th and 27th Divisions were involved. This action was the first undertaken on the Struma front and was entrusted to 27th Division, from which 81st Brigade was selected. Bala was captured easily, clearing the enemy in 20 minutes. Zir was a stiffer proposition and took the rest of the day. The Casualties during the campaign in Salonika - Killed : 146 Officers and 2,653 Other Ranks, Died of Wounds : 76 Officers and 1,349 Other Ranks, Died of Disease : 103 Officers and 4,110 Other Ranks, Wounded : 794 Officers and 16,214 Other Ranks, Missing / Prisoners : 118 Officers and 2,556 Other Ranks. Totals : 1,237 Officers and 26,882 Other Ranks. William was a Regular Soldier with 9 years service with the colours. He is also remembered on the Clifton Church Roll of Honour and on the Airdrie War Memorial.
