Additional Information

James originally enlisted in the Navy before obtaining a Commission in the Royal Flying Corps. He was on his first solo flight when his engine began to misfire before stopping altogether. He put the nose down but suddenly the engine started up again sending his plane into a spin which sent him crashing to the ground at high speed. Death was instantaneous. James was home a short time before his death. On the morning of his death his mother Mary received a cheery letter from him, which he had written the day before. James is also remembered on the Coatbridge Technical College Roll of Honour and in the St. Augustine's Parish (book) Roll of Honour and at the Family Plot in Old Monkland Cemetery (see photos).
